The Las Cruces Fire Department is asking residents to clear their backyards and lawns for dead grass, weeds and shrubs because they are a fire hazard.
"I think it's sort of an eyesore," Las Crucen Ute Thomas said.
KFOX14 spoke with Thomas as she was weeding her 92-year-old mother's property, as she said she does every Sunday.
Thomas said that she doesn't want to take any chances of a fire starting at her mother's house.
"I'm going to make sure that she's got a safe and good-looking place," Thomas said.
The city fire department said that the freezing temperatures over the winter and the especially dry weather conditions over the spring have left a lot more gardens and lawns browner than usual.
"We've noticed a lot of vegetation has died and created a fire hazard," said Las Cruces firefighter Steve Alexander.
Fire officials said that the shrubs should be at least 30 feet away from the homes because if a fire does start, there's the risk of the flames spreading from the plants to the houses
"The winds don't help any," Alexander said. "It just helps spread it a lot more quickly."
Homeowners are warned to keep a cleared open space around their home that doesn't have any flammable material. That way, it serves as a barrier for the home and lowers the chances of a fire rapidly spreading to it.
"I've seen dead grass burning and it's not a pretty sight and it's dangerous," Thomas said.
At 12:57 pm a call regarding an injured party in McKelligon Canyon was received resulting in the Combined Search and Rescue team being dispatched to the scene.
Approximately 10 Fire and 3 Police Department units participated in the mountain rescue.
The patient was an approximately 45 year old female who had fallen down an embankment while hiking.
Crews brought the patient down from the mountain at approximately 3:30 pm.
She was treated for dehydration and non-life threatening injuries before being transported to the hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

A home in the Kern Place neighborhood was damaged by a brush fire on Saturday night.
Fire crews responded to a home at 1019 Mesita around 10:30 p.m. Saturday. When firefighters arrived, they found flames coming from the back of the home and extinguished the fire in less than 10 minutes, preventing it from spreading to the interior of the home.
Fire investigators found that the fire started in some brush in the alley and spread to the exterior of the home and caused $1,000 in damage.
The cause of the brush fire was undetermined.
The fire department wants to remind citizens to take some steps to ensure that you are always as safe as possible.
They said to always have working smoke alarms in your home and develop and practice your home escape plan to make sure that everyone knows what do in case of an emergency.
Also with the current drought conditions, be advised that any fire that starts in brush or dried grass will burn rapidly. Be extra careful with sources of ignition such as matches or cigarettes.
If you have any questions or need information on how to keep you and your family safe from the effects of an emergency, please call the El Paso fire department at 915-485-5699.
